Speech
Therapy
Helping children communicate with confidence.
Every child has something to say. Sometimes they just need extra support finding the words, producing sounds clearly, understanding language, or navigating conversations with others.
Bridgeview Speech Therapy provides individualized speech and language services for children and adolescents. Therapy is designed around your child's specific needs, with practical strategies that carry over beyond the therapy session and into home, school, and everyday life.
-
Some children have difficulty understanding language, expressing their thoughts, learning new vocabulary, forming sentences, or telling stories.
Speech therapy can support children who have difficulty with:
Expressing wants, needs, and ideas
Understanding questions or directions
Learning and using new vocabulary
Putting words together into sentences
Grammar and sentence structure
Organizing and retelling stories
Higher-level language skills needed for school
-
When a child's speech is difficult to understand, they may become frustrated or hesitant to communicate.
Therapy can address:
Articulation errors
Speech sound disorders
Persistent sound substitutions or distortions
Reduced speech intelligibility
Carryover of previously learned speech sounds into everyday conversation
Treatment focuses not only on producing sounds correctly during therapy, but on helping children use those skills naturally when talking with family, friends, and teachers.
-
Children who stutter may repeat sounds or words, prolong sounds, or experience moments when speech feels "stuck."
Fluency therapy is individualized to the child and may include strategies to support easier communication, reduce communication-related tension, and help the child develop confidence as a communicator.
The goal is not simply to eliminate stuttering. We want children to feel comfortable communicating and participating even when their speech isn't perfectly fluent.
-
Knowing what to say is only one part of communication. Children and adolescents may also need support understanding how communication changes depending on the person, situation, or environment.
Therapy may address:
Starting and maintaining conversations
Joining a group or activity
Understanding another person's perspective
Recognizing nonverbal communication
Repairing communication breakdowns
Self-advocacy
Navigating friendships and peer interactions
Communicating in unfamiliar or stressful situations
Social communication therapy is particularly valuable when these differences interfere with relationships, independence, school participation, or everyday activities.
-
Autistic children and adolescents may have unique communication strengths as well as areas where additional support would make everyday communication easier.
Therapy is individualized rather than focused on making a child communicate in a particular way or appear "less autistic." Depending on the child's goals, treatment may address expressive and receptive language, social communication, self-advocacy, conversational skills, or functional communication across different environments.
For older adolescents and young adults, therapy may also focus on communication skills needed for increasing independence, including navigating school, work, friendships, and community interactions.
-
Speech-language pathologists have specialized knowledge of the language skills that underlie reading and writing.
Children with dyslexia or other language-based learning difficulties may need support with skills such as:
Phonological and phonemic awareness
Connecting sounds with written language
Vocabulary
Reading comprehension
Understanding complex language
Organizing written and spoken ideas
When appropriate, Bridgeview can collaborate with families, teachers, and other professionals to help strengthen the language foundations necessary for successful reading and learning.
